Grade Overview

What are SS Coils 430 and AISI Coils 430?

SS Coils 430, also referred to as AISI Coils 430, are stainless steel ferritic coils comprised of approximately 16-18% chrome. This grade isn't able to be hardened with heat treatment, and is renowned for its outstanding resistance to corrosion in mild environments, its excellent quality and formability, as well as its cost-effectiveness. SS 430 is magnetic and provides excellent resistance to stress and oxidation cracking caused by corrosion.

Metallurgical Characteristics of SS 430 Coils

The basic principle behind SS 430 is built in its ferritic structure that gives them durability, resistance to oxidation, and magnetic qualities.

Fe
Iron
Base metal forming the primary structure of the alloy.
Cr
Chromium
Provides corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance by forming a passive protective layer.
C
Carbon
Adds strength and hardness; excessive carbon can reduce corrosion resistance.
Mn
Manganese
Improves strength and toughness; assists in hot working properties.
Si
Silicon
Enhances strength, oxidation resistance, and acts as a deoxidizer during steel production.
P
Phosphorus
Improves machinability but can reduce toughness if present in high amounts.
S
Sulfur
Small amounts may improve machinability; too much can reduce corrosion resistance.
Ni
Nickel
Often minimal in 430; can slightly improve corrosion resistance.
